I have a series of small cross stitches for a couple of patterns I created. Problem is I made them on scrap Aida, so there’s no extra fabric to frame them, and I have been looking for ways to use them as they are cute.
First tiny project was a pin cushion:
I used all material I had around the house from the fabric to the filling, so this is the perfect scrap buster project.
You can find the pattern for the little cat in the flamingo under the Freebie section in this blog.
Here’s how I made it:
1) cut two squares or rectangles of fabric. Size and shape is up to you. Even a heart or a round will work, just make sure that it has at least 1 cm allowance around the cross stitch.
2) pin the cross stitch on the right side of one of the fabric square.
3) Sew around the cross stitch shape and then cut the excess while leaving a tiny border around. I used one square as a guide.
4) Pin both fabric squares right side together, sew only three sides, and turn.
You might want to cut the corners before turning so they are less bulky.
4) now the filling. I have a bag of fabric scraps, too small to do anything, but still a pity to discard, so I have been cutting them in fabric confetti with the idea of using them as filling for cushions at some point. However, before filling it I placed clips all around to avoid then catching the filling while top stitching.
5) fold each of the raw side inside to hide it and then pin them together with more clips. Then top stitch all around.
I have a few more of these, and have some other small craft ideas, like bookmarks or cards. You can find the cross stitch patterns in my Etsy shop, but if you want a preview, the cat in the box is available in the Freebie section with the Cat in the flamingo.
Let’s see what the future brings for these little cute cross stitch!
