Crafting and creating has always been a constant in my life since childhood and it’s always been in my family in more or less traditional ways.
I have memories of a children’s knitting kit with plastic needles my mom got me; of attempts from aunts to teach me how to crochet; of an easel and a painting set a friend of my dad gifted me; of me drawing landscapes on trips with my parents.
On and off, I’ve been always creating, and once I finally managed to have a stable income, part of it has steadily gone into supplies for old and new crafts.
There is a craft in particular that I picked up again after an estimated 30 year break, once I fell into a rabbit hole of indie designers: cross-stitch.
I remember being at elementary school, I was probably 8-9: we had to make a small cross-stitch and I was given the most difficult pattern, a tiny snowy landscape, because I knew already how to do it! As a very shy and mostly uncool kid, that was a very proud moment!
Fast forward to 2020 with loads of time in my hands because of the Apocalypse, I caved in, got myself a couple of cat and food related patterns, ordered all the supplies and found one of the most mindful crafts: who knew that stabbing repeatedly a piece of fabric would be that therapeutic!
Here’s a few finishes:
Currently, I have two cross-stitch WIPs:
- A full coverage Cat in Space from my favourite Cross-stitch pattern shop.
- A coffee-themed set of small cross-stich from the Daily Cross Stitch website.
When I moved into my new house, a friend gave me some frames that have been hanging sadly around the house with no pictures. Since I need to have a break from WIP #1 because it’s… A LOT… I looked for something quick and easy, and this is how I decided to celebrate my most beloved addiction: coffee.
Three out of six are now done, all snarky sentences, and I’m still pondering on what the other three will be. There are two options:
- Cakes and cats cross-stitches.
- Coffee watercolour paintings.
Cross-stitch wasn’t the only hobby I resuscitated: a friend had a birthday in April, and I wanted to make something special, so I painted them a watercolour card. I hadn’t painted in a few years, but my watercolours have been out since April. I can’t say I’ve been doing a lot as I’ve been preoccupied with other stuff recently, but at least one Instagram inspired masterpiece was produced.
Which craft will win?
