My Journey to Zero Waste

As we all know, we are on track to be royally fucked by climate change… Nonetheless, I still believe we have to try to do something and, since it’s another lockdown Sunday and the weather is horrendous, I thought it was time for a round-up of my zero waste journey to see where I am and what I can improve next.

The good:

  • Homemade coconut oil face moisturiser with tea tree oil has been my go to recipe for years, and apparently it’s doing miracles for my skin! It can also be used on your hands and anything else really.
  • Almond oil make up remover: it comes in a plastic bottle but it last forever especially when not wearing make-up since there’s no where to go.
  • Crochet face scrubbers.
  • Soap bar for the shower.
  • E-cloths are my last discover: they clean only with water and they actually work! I use one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom, and a mop.
  • Period pads: I’ve been using them for years, good for the environment, good for my vagina!
  • Veggies at the farmer’s market.
  • Pit Putty deo in tin boxes: it lasts a lot!

The bad:

  • I temporarily went back to use shampoo and conditioner in plastic bottles after using Lush bars during the pandemic. However, since I wash my hair left often they lasted quite a lot, but I’m planning to start refilling the bottles in the zero waste shops in the neighbourhood.
  • Toothpaste: I tried to make my own and used Lush tabs, but went back again to the “usual” tubes.
  • Food shopping is where I struggle especially now with the pandemic. And something has also to do with my general anxiety about “new” things. There are shops in the area, but mentally it’s just easier to go to the supermarket as there’s a certain degree of anonymity…

The obvious:

  • Tote bags and backpack for shopping.
  • Bottled water: I haven’t bought a bottle of water in years, I still find the concept of selling water preposterous. Please give us more fountains!

So, yeah, it looks like that my list gave me what’s my next steps:

  • Ditch the bottled shampoo
  • Eat more mindfully
