Make Nine 2019 – Project 1: Shiny Leggings

Starting with a bang!

The first project was started soon after the Nine were selected thanks to a sneaky cold that went from half-assed to full-fledged over the weekend. And since the fabric was already out for the pictures, and all supplies are always conveniently spread around my living room, it was very easy to motivate me to start. Also, loads of concerts in 2019 and as such shiny leggings are very much needed to look cool and metal as fuck.

This is my second pair of leggings and it looks like I’m already becoming an expert (sort of). The pattern I used is the same as last time, and it felt slightly faster to sew, even if I made a bit of a mess with the waist band.

First lesson learned: try it on before top-stitching. It turned out that the waist band was too big and I’d risk to flash my lovely butt, so I basically had to re-sew it again.

Second lesson learned: the pattern needs some adjustment as I lost a few cm thanks to the re-found joy of working out 4-5 times a week.

Third lesson learned: put the pins perpendicular to where you need to sew, so the sewing machine will easily sew on top and it makes it easier overall. This is probably a super silly thing that everyone sewing knows about, but I didn’t… I’ve been mostly self-teaching myself how to sew with trial and error method (mostly error, really…) and some support from the internet.

Fourth lesson learned: the main reason why I started to sew my own leggings is that the RTW (ready-to-wear) ones always break in between the legs as I have thunder thighs (I’m very proud of them, by the way! They come from literally hours of sweat skating and running). This time I added a reinforcement on the crotch by sewing two strips of fabric in both direction: it feels pretty strong!

And it also gives it a nice proper pants finish.

Fifth lesson learned: I look very cool with them! Hell yeah!

They already passed the test: worn them twice without accidents! And they’ll be ready from the first proper concert of the season: Steel Panther! Ozzy and Judas Priest was meant to be the first one, but it was postponed unfortunately, but I’m ready to look massively metal and moderately headbang because otherwise my neck will be stuck the day after (Hashtag: oldmetalheadproblems).

The next post is going to be about either the bralette or the loose top. I’ve sewed a test bra from an old sport t-shirt, but I need other supplies to be able to sew a wearable one, while for the loose top I have all the material but not a pattern.

I’m taking the Sunday off from the world today, and I feel like sewing a bit more (and drinking coffee, loads of coffee), so let’s see what this lonely day will bring us.
