Bathroom Makeover: Wall Painting

I finally started my first little project to make this house a little more mine, and it starts with the smallest room: the bathroom.

This is going to be a WIP for a long time, I’m a bit the George R. R. Martin of home renovations.

Anyhow, after a 3 day affair, I finally have a nicely painted bathroom (almost).

Day 1: Cracks&Holes.

The walls were not in the best shape, in particular near the window, as it looks like someone just slapped plaster on it and then painted on. With Polyfilla and a putty knife, I managed to get an almost flat wall.

Day 2: Clean Up

Just a girl and her big yellow sponge.

Day 3: Painting

Finally, the big day. It took me the whole day, and 2 coats, and finally my bathroom was done, and to be honest I was surprised it didn’t look too bad!

And as a bonus, I did also the upper half of the hallway.

Before getting my hands (literally) dirty, I made a whole lot of research.

First, what kind of paint?

Being a bathroom, I should have ideally chosen a special paint against damp and mold, but my house isn’t very humid, albeit being in Ireland, so I went for some normal water-based paint mostly because I didn’t want to spend a lot on money at my first attempt of painting. Home Base had a discount for two 2.5L tubs of paint, which was perfect since I needed two colours.

Second, what kind of finish?

Ideally, gloss is advised for bathroom as it’s easier to clean, but again, I went the opposite way, and went for matte because of the style I’m trying to go for. In addition, only the upper half of the bathroom is painted, since the lower is tiled, so it should minimise the risk of ruining it.

Third, what kind of brushes?

Actually, I didn’t search a lot. I just picked up a set in Home Base containing rolls, brushes and other bits&bobs. One thing however I went to buy after the first coat was an angled brush for corners, and it did make it easier.

Next, it will be kitchen rails, baskets, and macramè to organise the bathroom.

And a few more things I’d like to fix/change/upcycle:

  • the mirror.
  • the door.
  • the vanity.
  • the color of the floor tiles.
  • the shower.
