Of Cats and Masks

2020 is the Schrödinger’s cat of years: it’s simultaneously the longest and shortest year.

However, it turns out that this is exactly what Schrödinger wanted to disprove and we have been getting it all wrong. Or maybe it was only me. Although several articles on a Google search about Schrödinger with titles including words such as “Myths” and “Misunderstandings” are enough of a clue that maybe I’m not the only one.

Anyway, today I learned:

First, Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment is about quantum physics.

Second, the poor kitty is most definitely dead or alive in the box. Remember it’s a thought experiment, no cat was harmed.

Third, Schrödinger wanted to prove that the theory of superposition of quantum states was nonsense. Einstein agreed too.

Now that I fact-checked myself and managed to rein in my hamster-on-LSD brain, let’s go back to 2020.

I’ve been up to some moderate amount of crafting. Mostly furiously piercing fabric with needles with some blanket crocheting interlude and a timid (unfinished) attempt at panties sewing. And of course… masks!

Since my first attempt back in April here, too big for my face, I experimented with a different shape and after two attempts I managed to find the perfect shape and size for my face.

My method was very trial and error: I draw the shape on a piece of paper, and then check and cut and check until it fit my face. The first attempt was a bit wonky, but now I have a pattern on (caffeinated) paper ready to be used.

Ah!

It’s honestly a very quick and satisfying and life saving craft! Maybe an hour to cut, sew and assemble, it could be even faster if you don’t have the attention span of a sleepy gold fish.

So sew (and wear) a goddamn mask!

Quick tutorial:

  • I use three layers: two outside cotton fabric – the pretty ones, and one internal from an old running t-shirt. Two would work too, but I like the added protection and it’s totally breathable.
  • I like to use pinking shears to make it less bulky once turned.
  • I use a shoe lace to tie my mask so I can leave it around my neck ready to be worn. Upcycle win!
  1. Fold each piece of fabric and cut 6 pieces in total, 2 for each fabric.
  2. Sew all three pairs on the mid seam.
  3. Line up the 2 outer parts with the right sides touching and then the inner part.
  4. Sew along the top and bottom.
  5. Turn and top stitch.
  6. Fold and sew the sides leaving about half a centimetre to create a case for the elastic or string.
